1.Nemed

What is NEMED?

NEMED (NEtwork of Multigrade Education) is a transnational network supported by the Comenius 3 Action of the Socrates Programme of EU.

NEMED brings together educationalists and researchers from ten European countries, who share an interest in researching, enhancing and supporting multigrade education, in their countries and at the European level.

Multigrade' education? What do you mean?

In multigrade schools teachers work with more than one curriculum grade at the same time in the same class.

Multigrade schools play an important role in providing access to ‘Education for All’ in many parts of the world – both developing and industrialised. They are also more than a reality in primary education in many parts of Europe, arising through necessity rather than choice. Their role is crucial, as they provide isolated communities in remote and disadvantaged areas with pedagogy and community service of good standards.

Nevertheless, due to geographical peculiarities and other socio-economic oddities, multigrade schools typically constitute a neglected aspect of education systems.

2. Multigrade and Education for All /Institute of Education London

Multigrade classes, in which teachers work with more than one curriculum grade at the same time, are widespread in developing countries. They are also surprisingly common in industrialised countries. Yet the needs of learners and teachers in multigrade classes remain invisible to those who plan, design and fund education centrally. In most countries, multigrade classes arise through necessity rather than choice. Multigrade teaching is often the only type of education to which learners have access. In many areas, parents do not have the opportunity to choose between sending their child to a school with multigrade or monograde classes. If they choose not to place their child in a multigrade class, the child will remain uneducated. Access to multigrade classes, and the quality of teaching and learning in them, are central strategies in the worldwide fulfilment of Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals for education.

Institute of Education

The Institute of Education has been carrying out systematic research on learning and teaching in multigrade settings since 1998. The research is designed to raise awareness among policy makers, planners and practitioners of the extent, problems, opportunities and needs of the multigrade learning and teaching environment.

3. Multigrade and the World Bank

Despite the considerable effort and commitment made by the local governments and the international community, achieving the goal of Education for All (EFA) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in developing countries, especially in Africa, remains tremendous challenge.  To break this trend requires deliberate actions and exploration of alternative delivery methods of
education services.

Multigrade teaching, which has been practiced in both developed and developing countries for some years and has shown success with adequate support, is considered one of the alternatives and has received increased attention from the development community and some African countries.

In responding to the growing demand from African countries, within the framework of a capacity-building program focusing on quality improvements in teaching and learning in basic education in Africa, the World Bank Institute in collaboration with the Africa Region at the World Bank has developed and launched a series of learning initiatives to facilitate the dialogue and exchange on multigrade teaching as a policy option for Africa.

4. Muse

The MUSE project (Multigrade School Education) aims at developing an in service training programme that will be designed to meet the needs of multigrade schoolteachers in order to improve their educational performance in the multigrade school environment.

The training is based on methodological approaches of multigrade teaching and on the use of ICT applications so as to provide:

An in-service training programme for teachers of multigrade schools.

The use of the Internet in order to develop a platform for training, collaboration, networking and exchanging of ideas between teachers, students and trainers.

The proposed approach is expected to enhance professional skills of multigrade schoolteachers as well as develop their abilities to design and evaluate didactic plans. The MUSE project provides multigrade schoolteachers continuous training and support, enhancing communication among remote multigrade school teaching environment and outside educational community.
